As in many other European countries, Soccer is a major preoccupation. When an important
match is on TV, whole towns seem to grind to a halt, the streets become deserted
and the bars become full of men (usually) all eyes glued to the TV in the corner
of the bar. Sad, but a fact of life. |

The main teams in Portugal, and whose names you will hear repeatedly, are the Lisbon
clubs of Benfica and Sporting, and FC Porto in Porto. In the Algarve, the major
team is Portimão whose stadium is in the centre of the city near the “Modelo” shopping centre. |

The Algarve is a well known golfer's paradise. With perfect weather conditions,
all year round, and a grand selection of top-quality courses, more and more players of all standards, from the greenest amateurs to top professionals, are heading for
Southern Portugal to improve their technique and to enjoy challenging and exciting
golf. |

Away from the beach, there are a many riding stables that offer pony trecks (catering
for both novices and experienced riders) through the beautiful Algarvian countryside,
with experienced guides (check with your local tourist information office for details
of a stables near you.) |

In addition there are various companies offering “Safari” type jaunts in a variety
of four-wheel drive vehicles, if you wish to take a less leisurely approach to viewing
some of the Algarve’s more inaccessible inland delights. The Algarve also has many
tennis courts and a number of bowling greens for those so inclined.

Of course, in the Algarve, you are spoiled for choice
when it comes to water-sports.
With so many luxurious Algarvian beaches to chose from, if you can do it in the
water, and it’s legal, the chances are you can do it here! |

Virtually all the major coastal resorts offer surfing, wind-surfing, water-skiing,
jet-skiing, dinghy sailing, snorkelling, scuba-diving, boat trips, fishing trips
(including big-game fishing), and paragliding.
